Wearing: Humility

Monday, January 17, 2011

History fascinates me.
I love reading the stories of people's lives, deeds and dreams--whether it's a Holocaust survivor, a gold-seeking explorer,a civil rights activist or humanitarian with a cause.
But nothing stirs my imagination quite like the struggle of our nation to find balance, peace and the ability to live together; united and connected.

In light of the battles fought in our land, worrying about what I wear, or what others think of what I wear seems small and insignificant, and it helps to take a moment to pause and look back...
to let the actions of brave people shift my perspective around to what is truly inspiring.

1955
Rosa Parks was arrested for disorderly conduct for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. It was her arrest and 14 dollar fine that started the bus boycotts in Montgomery city. The boycott lasted for one year and brought the Civil Rights Movement to the attention of the world.

Miss Mary Brent, principal of all white Glenn Elementary School in Nashville greets black and white students on the first day of school.
1957
Fifteen year old, Dorothy Geraldine Counts and three other students enroll in all white Harding High School in Charlotte, NC.

1960
Ruby Parks is escorted into an all white school by U.S. Marshalls.
Her famous walk inspired the Norman Rockwell painting "The Problem We All Live With".

  1. 'Wearing humility' may be one of your best blogs yet! I enjoyed the refreshing candor of it, even though the circumstances surrounding those days were of the most unpleasant kind! But we need to be reminded of where we have come from so that we don't return to the same place!! Thank you, Kristina.....awesome job, as always!

  2. This is a lovely tribute to those individuals who sacrificed so much to offer a vision of a world that could be a better place, for all people.
