South Africa: Chapter 1

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Drinking a bux to fortify me for the seven days without one in South Africa. HA.

Waiting for our flight departure.
21 hours later.....

Skirt: Anthro Laurenti Circle
Cardi and Tee: J.Crew
Flats: Steve Madden Heaven
I can't take it all in. The three hour ride from the airport to the mission feels slightly chaotic and when we wake the next morning to birds calling from outside barred windows, it seems winter has come and gone in the space of a few hours.
It's so bright here. The grass so green...all the colors enhanced somehow.  The missionary drives us through Golden Gate park where we're greeted by a visual feast of high buttes, lush foliage and jumping spring bucks.  On each side we're surrounded by red and white rock cliffs and herds of zebras, which we chased with the exuberance of children.
It's the wildest feeling--the winding, paved road juxtaposed against a landscape teeming with raw nature. We sit on cliff edges and drink in the moments pregnant with wonder...trying to soak in the enormity of if all.
Late in the evening, we drive through clouds as they roll in to blanket the mountains, golden sunlight folded inside each one.  The sun fights the coverage, but loses, as it is destined to do each night and we return to the mission inspired by a landscape too enormous to grasp hold of and eager to meet the people who reside in this beautiful land.
