Making it Work

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

I generally buy clothes for quality and use-ability rather than quantity; as a result, my wardrobe works very hard for me.
I never look at a piece and say,
"Well, that's too dressy for this event", or
"This piece will ONLY go with that".
I'm always trying to take what I've bought and
like Tim Gunn from Project Runway would say,
"MAKE IT WORK" for as many occasions as possible.
For example, these are a few of the ways I've multi-tasked
the Catmint Dress to get the most out of my money.

Catmint Dress worn as jumper.
J.CREW tuxedo button up blouse
LOFT double wrap belt
Seychelles Twisted Sandals

Catmint Dress worn as skirt
J.CREW knit blouse
Ruche white Belt
Miz Mooz Green Flats

J.CREW Boyfriend Cardi
J.CREW tube scarf
Anthropologie Looping Lanes Belt
Steve Madden Gladiators
COACH bag (hopefully with money in it!)

GAP Denim Shirt
Steve Madden Gladiators
Milkmaid Braids (curly girl just trying to survive the humidity!)

Obviously, everything I try doesn't always fly, but at the end of the day, if I've been able to do my job, have fun with my kids and still feel attractive and pulled together, then it's probably a look I'll end up repeating.
What about you?
Are you a re-wearer or not really?

  1. Love the looks you created. Great idea to turn the dress into a skirt! I'm like you and I will only make a purchase if an item can be worn more than 4 ways and can stretch into at least 2 seasons.

  2. I love each of these looks. And I am definitely a re-wearer. I have a crocheted cropped cardigan that I tend to wear at LEAST 3 times a month during the summer. I'm going to wear it until it is in tatters.

  3. I absolutely love seeing fashionistas re-wear items and how they re-wore them. Fantastic looks, all of them. I try to re-wear as much as possible too, the hard thing for me is to make things look different every time.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Ah, Kristina, something was wrong with how I put your RSS feed into my reader, it wasn't showing any updates for you! I've just been catching up with your outfits for the last few weeks, and I am so impressed and inspired! And I love so many of the pieces you made yourself, your sewing skills are awesome! And I LOVE all of your multi-tasking posts like these, you show off the versatility of the piece so well :)

  5. Eek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel so ashamed I've only worn mine a couple of times. I love the button down underneath it!

AND OMG, I just LOVE your blog. I love how you take things apart to make it work for you. It's something I wish I could do, but I'm so afraid of ruining things.

  6. I am so loving your blog! I like to rewear things and mix things up creatively, and it's so much fun to see what you come up with. Your fashions and refashions are amazing. I wish I had your talent with fabric! Well, you'll need customers once you open on Etsy, and I will be waiting with bated breath. Cheers!

  7. Kristina, I love this real pretty dress with the Foile Print, especially the original way you wore it. I also love most the first (Work Look) and third (Weekend Look.) All four looks are nice, polished, chic though casual and pulled together.

And to answer your question, no I am not a re-wearer not really. To be honest with you I have a huge closet and a ton of clothes and I've only worn most of them once or twice, some are still in tags. But the ones I have worn several times, I try to do it different the second, third, fourth time around and so forth. I try to pair them with other pieces and make them feel different, unique and NEW each time. =)

  8. Bravo! You look amazing, Kristina! I think I am a rewearer, my only problem is that I need good basic pieces! Thanks again!
