Day 3: Coordinating Versus Contrasting

Good Afternoon, darlings...
since Blogger decided to have malfunction issues
this post is getting out later than planned,
but better late than never, I guess.

While taking Design classes a couple years ago,
the eight weeks I spent studying coordinating and contrasting
were the most insightful lessons learned on how to work colors
either against each other or with each other,
and it's a concept I use more than anything else
to see how much mileage I can get from the clothes
hanging in my closet.

Rather than go on and on with words,
I think these pictures will explain more than anything
I can say...plus, they're a lot more fun to look at!

Coordinating color tones are next to
each other on the color wheel,
while a contrasting color shade would fall
more directly opposite on the color wheel.
Working a piece with several color
spectrums will give your wardrobe
several more outfit options than
you might have initially thought.

I love how the burnt orange pops in the middle version.

At first glance, this middle version looks
more contrasting than the one on the right.
But it falls in the middle because orange is closer
to yellow and brown on the color wheel than navy.

See how much fun you can have?
It's like being given a brand new wardrobe!
So, now that you've seen all my outfits for the next three weeks,
prepare to be bored with all OOTD postings! =)

(Gap navy dress, J.Crew cardi, Claire's button belt, Steve Madden wedges,
Anthropologie Work Weekend Bag)

Have the most fabulous weekend EVER!

  5. I wish I had as much fashion sense! I often pose as an interior designer (mostley I love the process of the workroom, not so much the selling) and I dread finding something that makes me look professional and comfortable at the same time. Many of my designers run around in ball caps and sweats, but I want to step it up to more of the higher end clients! You make it look SO easy.

  6. Hey there, Nice post on color schemes. I am a beadweaver who also loves looking at fashion blogs. I have read many books on color theory for crafters. And I have to say that your pics say it all very well. See, a picture IS worth a thousand words. PS I love your sense of style.
